Chapter
1 The Lord of Hosts
Jesus Christ, as presented by The Father and Jesus' testimony is, according to the Word, "And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given to me in heaven and in earth . . . " (Matthew
28:18). He is revealed as Deity with absolute sovereignty and authority for eternity.
- The Lord of Hosts
- There are 273 instances of the phrase "Lord of Hosts" in the Old Testament. (1)
- Of course it would not be incorrect to say that he is the "Lord of all the stars and planets..." but really, that's not the emphasis.
- The following is probably the most definitive use of this word referring to "armies" - whether human or angelic.
- Isaiah 40:22 says that God sits upon the circle of the earth!
- Who is this King of Glory? The Lord of hosts, he is
the king of glory. Selah." (Psalm 24:10).
- "Lord" is the covenant name of God.
- Pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus
- "... when Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and
looked, and behold, there stood a man over against him
with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto
him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our
adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host
of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to
the earth and did worship... And the captain of the Lord's
host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for
the place where thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so...
And the Lord said unto Joshua..." (Joshua 5:14-6:2)
- 9) "Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good
courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the
LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." (Joshua 1:9).
- HIS AUTHORITY
- All authority is vested in Jesus Christ; yet He has given His
authority to us to overcome all the power of the enemy.
- Demons get their "authority" from Satan.
- Dr. Lewis Chafer points out that "Demon influence, like their
activity, is prompted by two motives, both to hinder the purpose of
God for humanity, and to extend the authority of Satan. They
therefore, at the command of their king, willingly cooperate in all
his God-dishonoring undertakings. This influence is exercised
both to mislead the unsaved and to wage an increasing warfare
against the believer," ( Ephesians 6:23 ). (2)
- Jesus' command
- Given to all to whom He commissions.
- The twelve apostles (Matthew 10:1).
- The seventy ( Luke 10:1-19).
- Every Believer.
- "He said to them, 'Go into all the world and preach
the good news to all creation . . . And these signs will
accompany those who believe: In my name they will
drive out demons . . ." Mark 16:15,17.
- Knowing authority enables one to enter into spiritual warfare with
faith to overcome.
- Each Christian must learn that he has power over any and
every demonic strong man.
- We as true believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, can bind and
cast out demons.
- "I have given you authority to trample on snakes and
scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy;
nothing will harm you," Luke 10:19.
- The believer in Christ has not only the spiritual ability of the Holy
Spirit in him, but also the authority of the name of Jesus.
- "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given unto
me, Therefore go . . . " Matthew 28:28.
- He gave the power and authority to go.
- The name "Jesus" is the legal right of absolute authority.
- His power is
- "Far above all rule and authority, power and dominion,
and every title that can be given, not only in the present
age but also in the one to come," Ephesians 1:21.
- His power is above all power.
- The battle is the Lords
- 17 "Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand
ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and
Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against
them: for the LORD will be with you.18 And Jehoshaphat bowed
his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the
inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshiping the
LORD. 19 And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and
of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God
of Israel with a loud voice on high."
- We are reminded :"As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the
Lord, so walk ye in Him: Rooted and built up in Him, and
stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein
with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through
philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the
rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in Him dwelleth
all the fulness of the Godhead bodily," Colossians 2:6-9.
- In order for a believer to be consistently led of the Holy Spirit, and
thereby, be continually sowing to the Spirit, they must of necessity, be
filled with the Spirit.
- The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth.
- "Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our
Lord Jesus Christ!" (1 Cor. 15:57).
- "You are to cling to the Lord your God... for the Lord your
God is He who fights for you, just as He promised you. So
take diligent heed to... love the Lord our God." (Josh. 23:5-11)
- "Our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might
against this great company that cometh against us;
neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee. 13
And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones,
their wives, and their children.".2 Chron 20:12-13,12.
- Christ's Threefold Mission
- Every page of the Gospels contains precious treasures.
- Their truths are many and marvelous.
- Three statements of Jesus regarding Himself:
- "I am the door"
- "I am come that they might have life, and that they might
have it more abundantly."
- "I am the good shepherd, the good shepherd giveth
his life for the sheep.
- The New Birth
- Christ is the simple way to God; John 3:16.
- The Abundant Life
- Christ is the sole way to God; John 10:8, 9.
- The Abundant Life
- Christ is the satisfactory way to God; John 10:9.
- Christ alone is the Author of life; John 1:4.
- Christ is the Arbiter of all grace; John 10:27, 28.
- Christ dispenses abundant blessing; John 10:10.
- The Blessed Lordship.
- This Lordship involves a personal relationship;
- John 10:lla. "I am the good shepherd.
- This Lordship makes an abundant provision more abundant; Luke 11:3.
- This Lordship assures adequate protection,
- "The good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep," John 10:l.
CONCLUSION: With earthly shepherds, one might lose his life for the sheep, and yet the sheep perish; but not so with the Lord who is our Shepherd. When He gives His life for us, it is that ours might be saved. We are saved by His death, for in death He is with us and for us, and in death He is conquering our enemy. (3)
